Our Flying Site

The entrance to our field is located at 3821 South Henry Ruff, on the west side of the road just south of Michigan Avenue. As we are on the border of Westland and Inkster, please note that some commercial GPS units insist that you enter “Inkster” for the city, while others insist on “Westland.” When you turn south off Michigan Avenue onto Henry Ruff, you will cross a train track, and then a construction site on your left and a storage yard for Wayne Country on your right. Just past the storage yard there will be a long fence along the right-hand (west) side of the road. Our gate is on that fence line, exactly 1/4 mile from Michigan Avenue. You have to watch carefully, as our current sign by the gate is not very large. If you start to approach the apartments on your left side, you are a half-block too far.

The main gate leads to a community garden, and a second interior gate leads to the field. Follow the road around the the left and you’ll see the main field to your left, and the FPV field to your right. Please help us maintain our road by keeping your speed below 10mph!

Our center of operations, at Latitude 42.279096°, Longitude -83.343320°, is our 720 square foot permanent shelter added in 2013 to provide shade and a place for spectators to relax and watch the pilots.

The fenced flight line runs diagonally Northwest to Southeast to take advantage of the prevailing winds in the area. We also have a windsock to monitor flying conditions, and a storage container where we keep picnic and maintenance supplies. Our flyover space is over 45 acres, with 5 acres kept short and regularly rolled to provide a suitable surface for takeoffs and landings.

Our flying site is an FAA Recognized Identification Area (FRIA), an FAA and Homeland Security designation that allows for RC operations without the need for a remote ID module installed in your aircraft. Once the remote ID requirement goes into effect in March of 2024, Signal Seekers members can enjoy an exemption from this rule while flying at our site.

The flight line includes several starting benches with holdbacks for warming up your engines, and a portable restroom is also provided during the flying season.
